DIOR PRESENTS A NEW EPISODE OF THE FEMALE GAZE WITH SARAH WAISWA

Cultura / Casa - 7/3/20

The Female Gaze, the third Dior Talks podcast series, gives voice to the House’s fascinating photographers, friends and collaborators who, through the prism of their feminine, singular and powerful eye, capture the essence of the collections from Maria Grazia Chiuri.

At the crossroads of portraiture and documentary, through captivating and poetic images Sarah Waiswa brings to light the facets of what she calls “the new African identity”. Born in Uganda and living in Kenya, and a sociology and psychology graduate, she dedicates her life to her passion – photography. In this interview with journalist Charlotte Jansen, she speaks about her convictions and how she explores social issues, such as those affecting the albino community, which is discriminated against and persecuted in a number of African countries. Her work on this powerful subject saw her receive the Discovery Award at the Rencontres d'Arles in 2016. For the Dior cruise 2020 collection, the artist called on childhood memories for her black and white images, inspired by the oeuvre of the Malians Seydou Keïta and Malick Sidibé. Reinterpreting the visual force of this heritage, she captures and highlights African beauty in all its diversity, echoing the broad definition of femininity celebrated by Maria Grazia Chiuri.
