J.Kim Fall/Winter 2017
28/08/2017 - Margaux Warin

Jenia Kim, the young designer behind the brand J.Kim, is endlessly inspired by Asia. She was brought up in Uzbekistan by her Korean parents, but her homeland is still a huge inspiration to her. Her most recent line is a true tribute to the Land of the Morning Calm: in it, she re-interprets, updates, and enhances Korean traditional dress. Kim plays with volume and proportions, 3D flowers, and immaculate finishings, delivering a sharp and bold collection. The young designer successfully magnifies and modernises Korean clothing with her personal interpretation of contemporary style.

Which artist(s) inspire you the most?

Johannes Vermeer

Describe your Fall/Winter 2017 collection in three words:

Still life, North Korea

What is your biggest source of inspiration?

My motherland Uzbekistan, Korean culture, national costumes

What do you think are the main stakes and challenges for the young designers?

Nowadays the most difficult thing is to surprise and be remembered. For all the rest it is possible to find a solution, but I'm not sure about it yet.

Where's the last place you travelled that inspired you?

Seoul. Last time I left the city with new impressions. I did not go to museums or exhibitions I just spent the week among ordinary hard workers and seniors. This is a very special feeling. This is what my next collection is about.

Which was your favorite piece from your latest collection, and why?

Red jacket with drapes. It reminds me of painting classes in college.

Which women inspire you the most?

Most of all - my mother, for various reasons. But generally speaking stylish and elegant women always inspire me a lot. It boosts my spirit when I see these kind of women.

The film that speaks most to your aesthetic?

"Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter...and Spring" directed by Kim Ki-duk

"In the mood for love" directed by Wong Kar-wai

If you could live in any era, which one would you choose?

I would choose to live in the present.

Please describe the J.Kim woman in three words:

The best woman.
