In 1997, Jonny Johansson and his creative collective ACNE created 100 pairs of raw denim jeans with red stitching and gave them away to friends and family within Stockholm’s creative underground.
The popularity of the jeans rapidly extended the offering beyond denim, evolving the collective into Acne Studios.
Johansson has always seen denim as the perfect canvas for a range of elements, which makes denim core to Acne Studios’ DNA, as evidenced by the recent re-launch of the 1996 and 1997 jeans – the brand’s first ever styles. Designed for both women and men, denim is a permanent range that can also include creative investigations into the material and seasonal collections.
For Spring/Summer 2020, Acne Studios introduces new denim styles inspired by the years they are named after, playing with denim icons and adding an Acne Studios feel to it. There are two new unisex styles, 1991 and 1992. The 1991 is a rigid denim and wider in the leg with a loose, slouchy fit, deep rise and button closure, offering various ways of styling. The high-waisted bootcut in rigid denim and button closure of 1992 is a directional yet classic look.
For the Women’s denim collection, 1994 exudes a nostalgic feel as a stretch skinny jean with ultra-high rise, zip closure and ankle length, while 1993 has a relaxed tapered fit in rigid denim with a super high rise, zip closure and cropped length. The range also includes Acne Studios classics such as 1997,
Mece, Climb, Peg and Melk. The colour palette is updated with seasonal washes as well as classic colourways. Denim jackets in oversized and cropped boxy styles round out the collection.
The Men’s collection draws parallels with the Women’s, featuring 2003, a new style in rigid denim with a relaxed fit that captures the essence of its eponymous year. To broaden the range, River, Max, and North remain staples and provide slim-cut options with stretch, each with their own subtle
distinction, while the classic 1996 is a rigid denim shaped to a high-rise silhouette with loose, straight legs. The collection is completed by denim jackets, offering boxy shapes with traditional western details, a modern take on workwear shirts and oversized jackets with dropped shoulders.
The new denim styles for Spring/Summer 2020 are available in stores and on acnestudios.com.
