Lucie and Luke Meier’s Spring/Summer 2024 collection is an exclamation mark to the noun “present”. And so is the portrait that British artist-photographer Jack Davison has made of it, choosing the neat, sculptural light of Tenerife, in Spain’s Canary Islands, to frame the garment’s silhouettes and outline their pure, substantial forms.

Besides the sunlight and the imposing Atlantic sky, the environment suggests a city. The architectures are graphic in form and color. A series of images and figures are cut in two: half light, half shadow, a chiaroscuro that reflects the way the Meiers circumvent the archetypes of women’s and men’s wear, merging function and glitz, day and night, workwear, craftsmanship, and innovative techniques. With not a hint of nostalgia.

The cinematic, haptic quality of Davison’s photography turns movements, bodies, and faces into a rhythmic sequence of still-lives, while the interplay between the layers of colors and backgrounds, mostly solid, seems to overturn the ordinary, elevating it.
