On June 2nd, 2022, a new Balenciaga store opens in Saint-Tropez, the first of its kind in the area. A stripped-down interior and restored façade iterate on the brand’s Raw Architecture concept, introduced in September 2021 with a number of renovations worldwide. This new design direction reacts to a site’s existing structures, exposing inner workings and accumulated histories, leaving surfaces intentionally raw. The resulting stores inherently require fewer virgin materials.

Balenciaga Saint-Tropez blends in with its French coastal town surroundings, leaving a warm-colored stucco exterior and shuttered windows largely unchanged except for logo-marked white awnings and a glass entryway. A large curtain made from upcycled Balenciaga T-shirts by the Mexico City-based artist Pia Camil hangs at the store’s entrance, bringing more warm tones into an otherwise greyscale interior.

The deconstructed space offers women’s and men’s ready-to-wear, shoes, bags, and accessories. Appliances are left bare,  the ceiling lined with industrial lighting. A rough, concrete floor resembles sidewalk tiles. Concrete walls and a grey velvet curtain are deliberately stained and damaged. Minimalistic seating is covered in worn black leather.

Aged patinas on metal shelves and counters, concrete slabs and bricks, pipe-like racks, and LED-lined vitrines are deployed as finishes, suspending the space in a state of progress. As well as effecting the new architectural concept, New Balenciaga stores and renovations aim to reach the highest standards in sustainable practices.
