Enhancing and celebrating the beauty of women is the driving force behind Alexandre Vauthier's creations. The designer started out at Mugler, whose architectural clothing he admires, eventually moving on to become head designer of Couture at Jean-Paul Gaultier for 8 years. In 2009 he created his eponymous brand made up of both Couture and Ready-to-Wear collections. His silhouettes are strongly inspired by the 1980s and appeal through their sensuality while being easy to wear. Vauthier is a sculptor playing with asymmetrical cuts, drapé and lamés, all of which have become crucial to his identity. His love for women is requited: celebrities are crazy for his designs, worn on red-carpets all over the world.

What has inspired you recently?

The blue of the Mediterranean

Please describe your Spring/Summer 2018 collection in three words:

Heavily inspired by my last couture collection.

Which is your favorite piece from your last collection and why?

I love them all! All for different reasons.

The preciseness of the suits, flashy lamés, fitted leather, 80s inspired polka-dot dresses and shoes: real fireworks!

The film which speaks to your aesthetic:

There isn’t one film, but a few. I draw my creative strength from this diversity.

The place where you relax:

I only need sun, blue sea and tranquility, I don’t need to be anywhere in particular.

If you could live in any era, which one would you choose?

I’m very happy in mine! I always find it slightly strange when people fantasize about a bygone era, it slows creative energy!

Which material do you prefer working with?

I love ‘grain de poudre’ to make well-cut suits, jersey for its fluidity and leather for its sensuality. I really like playing with organic materials.

What is your mantra?

« I STAND WITH DREAMERS »

If one woman (alive or not) could wear your collection for eternity, who would you choose?

Again, why one woman? Today we are talking about women in general; I don’t like uniformity.

The Alexandre Vauthier woman is…

I leave it up to you to define her!
