Collaboration / Fashion house - 6/18/21
In a reimagination of traditional retail partnerships, luxury house Burberry and global platform SSENSE present Imaginary Cities at Burberry Soho in New York City, making the first time Burberry has invited another retail partner to take over one of its spaces.
Burberry and SSENSE have come together in their shared approach to digital and physical innovation, pushing the boundaries to conceptualise a first of its kind offline and online multidisciplinary experience. Brought to life on burberry.ssense.com, the online experience is designed to mirror the physical immersive space in the store.
The façade of Burberry Soho is taken over by a series of motion graphics, introducing an entryway to the store’s ground-floor, transformed through a system of tunnel interventions, raised pathways, and dynamic lighting pouring through distressed tensile canopies expressly pulled away from the store structure.
The journey continues throughout the store into a dedicated showcase introducing Burberry’s Mythical Alphabet, a new capsule collection celebrating the Burberry animal kingdom. Designed in collaboration with British graphic designer Peter Saville and illustrator Jo Ratcliffe, the collection features beautiful half-human, half-beast figures enveloping the alphabet. The capsule takes form in reimagined trench coats printed with graphic illustrations, alongside easy-to-wear separates including monochrome T-shirts, elegant silk shirts and shorts, whilsts accessories are enlivened with Mythical Alphabet prints and hardware.
On the store’s second level, an immersive Burberry beige viewing room screens the exclusive A-B-CITY short film—a specially commissioned film by Burberry and SSENSE exploring the theme of Imaginary Cities. Directed by New York collective Torso Solutions, the film is set within the noisy hum of New York, centring the city itself as a key character, through which three adjacent vignettes move entropically in time. Featuring a diverse cast of personalities including Alexis Chaparro, Lourdes Leon, and Selyna Brillare, the film is an abstract meditation on coping with extreme change, with vignettes written by Brontez Purnell, Juliana Huxtable, Natasha Stagg.
Burberry and SSENSE Imaginary Cities at Burberry Soho is open for 10 days only from 17 June to 26 June 2021.
The Burberry’s Mythical Alphabet capsule collection is available exclusively at SSENSE (womenswear, menswear), Burberry.com, and select Burberry locations within the United States.
