JW Anderson is pleased to announce that the brand’s limited-edition artist collaboration blankets are now available at JWAnderson.com. Conceived by JW Anderson Founder and Creative Director Jonathan Anderson, the blankets are the product of a collaboration with two outstanding artists: Dame Magdalene Odundo DBE and Shawanda Corbett. Six original works of flat art, three from each artist, were translated into a series of limited-edition blankets, each individually numbered, with both woven and handknit versions available for purchase.
Dame Magdalene Anyango Namakhiya Odundo DBE is a Kenyan-born British potter and artist currently living in Surrey in the United Kingdom. She is perhaps most well-known for her vessels that are reminiscent of the human form and symbolic of the female body. Her work is part of permanent collections at nearly 50 international museums including: The British Museum, London; The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; The Hepworth Wakefield, Wakefield. It was via his curation of the exhibition Disobedient Bodies for The Hepworth Wakefield that Jonathan Anderson first met Odundo in 2017. At a visit to her studio years later, the pair came across a painting Odundo had made while living in Belfast, near where Anderson grew up, entitled, Cat Walk. The coincidences were too many to be ignored and thus the concept for the blanket collaboration was born.
In June 2020, during a brief relaxation of lockdown rules in the UK, Anderson was able to see the work of New York-born ceramicist and performance artist Shawanda Corbett at the Corvi-Mora gallery in London. She is currently engaged in a practice-based PHD at the Ruskin School of Art in Oxford, England and was one of the recipients of the Turner Prize Bursaries in 2020 (which replaced the Turner Prize).
Her interdisciplinary practice includes ceramic, painting, performance, photography and film. After seeing the London show and discussing her work with Odundo, Anderson found Corbett and her paintings would be an outstanding partner for the blanket collaboration.
The limited edition blankets cover reproductions of 6 works of art in total with 4 works knit by hand and 2 woven. The woven versions are available for immediate purchase while the hand-knit blankets will be made-to-order and delivered in approximately 8 weeks from order confirmation.
