Collaboration / Fashion house / Breaking news - 9/1/19

First revealed on the runway during Paris Fashion week, adidas Originals and the menswear brand OAMC have come together to reimagine three of the brand’s iconic silhouettes. Working closely with adidas Originals, OAMC’s Creative Director, Luke Meier, has created unexpected variations of timeless 3-stripes designs.

Fueled by adidas’ performance heritage, the collection is inspired by a broad spectrum of influences. Looking to both the mountaineering influenced notion of upward mobility and the grunge scene of the Pacific Northwest during the 90s, Meier merges cues from seemingly disparate sources of inspiration, bringing together clinical precision and gritty aesthetics. Having grown up in Canada, Meier describes the poignant geographic touchpoints of the collection by saying, “it has a special vibe: incredible and powerful nature, as well as a consciousness about culture, music, and art.” Beyond this, however, Meier makes clear that the inspiration is distinctly personal, “I was looking at some of the early 90s references from when I lived there for this collection, and some of the fabrics, shapes, and motifs helped to create a Pacific Northwest mood.”

Since its foundation in 2013, OAMC has committed itself to a fearlessly calculated approach to modern menswear, combining elements of industrialism, heritage and traditional fashion design into a single, cohesive identity. Similarly, throughout adidas’ history, the sportswear brand has maintained a relentless desire to innovate through a forward-thinking design philosophy. Discussing the collaborative nature of the collection, Meier explains “great collaboration, in the truest sense, is when two sides come together to create something that they couldn’t otherwise create on their own. I believe that the OAMC/adidas project is a true collaboration as we, OAMC, have a unique design perspective, and adidas has a unique expertise in high performance footwear and apparel.”

Bringing the collection to life is a campaign by photographer Juergen Teller, featuring musician and creative Dev Hynes. With his involvement in the campaign built on the foundation of authentic relationships, Hynes explains “I collaborate with people if they are friends, and/or, I respect them as a person” to him this means that joint projects such as this one become “a learned enjoyable experience based on personality and life”. Shot in Teller’s quintessentially humanizing style, the campaign plays with notions of everyday realism in order to highlight the collections’ functional influences. References to Hynes’ band, Blood Orange, punctuate the photo-set, highlighting Teller’s unique and playful sense of humor and demonstrating the truly collaborative nature of the project.

Merging Luke Meier’s eclectic array of references with adidas’ innovative approach to design, the adidas Originals by OAMC collection will be rolling out throughout September, October, and November.
