Shinsuke Kawahara and Pierre Hardy are longtime friends. Shinsuke is Japanese, Pierre is French, and yet they speak the same language, a language rich in their cultural, artistic and personal differences. One has made the rabbit his symbol and incorporates it into most of his work. The latter has transformed the perspective cube into an iconic pattern reinterpreted every season. Both are multidisciplinary; Shinsuke is an artist, chef, and a scenographer, while Pierre is a designer and creator. When he reflects on Pierre’s work, Shinsuke speaks of purity and of the imperceptible space which animates his creations and evokes calligraphy. “In Pierre’s creations, the invisible is fundamental, it offers an overall vision, like in an ultra-modern room. When I draw a painting, the line is important, but the void even more. We are both designers and I can feel that.”
When discussing Shinsuke’s work, Pierre recounts his unique personality. “I like Shinsuke’s work because it is the opposite of mine: narrative, figurative, dreamlike, very artisanal and spontaneous. And then I am passionate about Japan. The idea of these two universes meeting, that should not have crossed with each other, is appealing to me. In these confined times, we have found a way to travel towards each other.”
The meeting precisely plays on their differences. The poetry of one on the geometry of the other. Shinsuke’s three characters, Miss Yoga, Mr. Strong and Usagi, adorn three styles, a bag, wallet and pouch, in Pierre Hardy’s iconic cube pattern. A special encounter each time. Pieces are personalized by order and by hand by the artist; each drawing accompanied by a phrase, with the option to include initials.
THE COLLECTION.
Three styles of small leather goods, a bag, wallet and pouch, are customizable with the character of its choice, Miss Yoga, Mr. Strong and Usagi. Using a traditional method, Shinsuke Kawahara will draw the chosen character, a phrase of his inspiration, and initials, if desired.
