The Stories Behind the Episode
The opening episode unfolds in an apartment in Rome, a typical 20th century building, featuring vintage décor pieces. Inside the bedroom sleeping is where we see for the first time, the series’ main protagonist, Silvia Calderoni. Directors Gus Van Sant and Alessandro Michele are inviting the viewer into a vignette of everyday life of Silvia where she curiously approaches happenings around her. Silvia hears a band jamming in another room of the apartment, they are playing music by Jamison Baken.
We see Silvia open her mailbox and sift through colorful decorated envelopes, a selection of invitations from Gucci shows by Alessandro Michele over the past 5 years. Among them is a mysterious flyer. Whilst stretching, Silvia’s attention is caught by the television where Paul B. Preciado—writer, philosopher, curator, and one of the leading thinkers in the study of gender, sexual and body politics—is speaking in Spanish (he also speaks in French and English) about societal classifications of sex, gender and sexuality. Silvia writes a note whilst watching TV.
“Finalmente ci addattiamo al silenzio
Celebrazioni di sfumatore di indaco
faccia di tulipani”
“Finally we adjust to the silence
Celebration in shades of indigo
Faces of tulips”
A key scene from this episode features Silvia dropping a dress from the balcony, we see its silk plissé fabric flutter as it drops. Printed with the House’s Bloom floral design, the dress was part of Alessandro Michele’s first Gucci women’s collection, Fall Winter 2015. This dress will be part of a selection of reedition pieces from Fall Winter 2015 contained within ‘Ouverture Of Something That Never Ended’ collection, all featuring red labels stitched with ‘Something That Never Ended’. The dress flies away to the sounds of ‘Therefore I Am’, a new song by Billie Eilish. There are 97 looks in the ‘Ouverture Of Something That Never Ended’ collection. Kim Gordon, one of the founding members of Sonic Youth and a close friend of Gus Van Sant, is behind the music for the end title cards of every episode, a track called ’50 Shades of Green’.

Chatsworth crest socks
Pull up socks worn by the flatmate and friend riding the bicycle around the apartment feature a jacquard design of the crest of Chatsworth—a stately home which holds special ties with the House, being the location of the Cruise 2017 campaign featuring Vanessa Redgrave.
