BALENCIAGA CANNES
On April 11th, 2022, a new Balenciaga store will open on Boulevard de la Croisette as part of the JW Marriott Cannes’s renovation and expansion. Balenciaga Cannes will showcase the brand’s Raw Architecture concept, introduced in September 2021, by exposing the site’s inner workings and accumulated histories, leaving surfaces intentionally raw—inevitably consuming fewer virgin materials, as well as meeting strict sustainability requisites.
A tiled concrete floor that mimics sidewalk slabs and aged-concrete paneled walls serve as a monochromatic backdrop for the women’s and men’s ready-to-wear, shoe, bag, accessory, and eyewear collections. A deliberately unfinished interior includes exposed cables, piping, ventilation systems, and lighting fixtures, a metal grid and mesh ceiling, and suspended extruded aluminum bars used throughout as racks.
Aged patinas are deployed as finishes, suspending the space in a state of progress: distressed metal tables, worn leather seating, stained curtains. Protective glass, faux suede, high-end wool carpet, updating video screens, and fine lighting add modern touches to the space’s otherwise deconstructed references, placing Balenciaga’s varied offer in an uncanny and unexpected setting.
