JIL SANDER _ SHANGHAI NEW FLAGSHIP STORE

Jil Sander is proud to announce the opening of its new Shanghai flagship store within the context of the renovated JC Mall, an outstanding luxury hub on Nanjing West Road, the city’s fashion avenue.
The project evolves from the ongoing collaboration between Jil Sander’s creative directors, Lucie and Luke Meier, and distinguished British Designer Sir John Pawson, started in Tokyo - Omotesando and Paris - Avenue Montaigne.
The Meiers and Pawson share a vision guided by a simple yet sensitive approach. The flawless rhythm and subtle balance between light, colour, line, and material, aims at originating beautiful, functional spaces where people feel good; where “the first thing you register is the atmosphere, rather than the architecture”, as Pawson suggests.
The tactfulness of their projects is also expressed in the use of local materials and in the careful consideration of the context they work in. Externally the façades are constructed in flamed red-brown Chinese granite panels, while the interior floors are made of the same granite used externally, suggesting fluidity and easing access.
The 600 square metres are distributed over two floors, accessible from both the street and the interior of the building. The architecture of both façades creates a sense of privacy and transparency, projecting light and shade to the interior.
Upon entrance, one of the features of the store’s architecture is immediately perceptible: the total distribution of the space is visible at first glance, encouraging free movement at our own leisure and pace.
The granite plinths and vitrines at the center invite visitors to meander in an informal way. Everything is textured and tactile. The walls, ceilings and doors, and the perimeter aluminium screens, are coated off-white. The full height mirror wall panels magnify and wash the volumes in light. Rails and shelves provide graphic lines in polished stainless steel.
The second floor VIP room has a softer character, enveloping in muted tones and gentle, plush textures.
“Translating a specific idea, a feeling, in different forms, in new places and materials, is a constant source of inspiration in our work”, say Lucie and Luke Meier. “To be able to do it with Sir Pawson is a true pleasure”.
